VICTORY IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES! ---
RAHALL-INSLEE-SHAYS AMENDMENT PASSES
ROUND 2 GOES TO THE ENVIRONMENTALISTS...GET READY FOR ROUNDS 3 AND 4
Last night the House of Representatives passed the Rahall-Inslee-Shays amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill by a vote of 273 to 151. This vote is a huge victory in the fight to maintain the millsite mine waste dumping limitation. The vote represents a payoff on the hard work of folks here in D.C. and around the country, making their presence known in the halls of Congress.
By getting the House on record as opposing Larry Craig's Senate bill rider, which would strip the millsite provision of the mining law, we've made it much more likely that Craig's rider will not be part of the final Interior Appropriations bill that goes to President Clinton to be signed. The bipartisan nature of the vote was especially key, 78 Republicans voted to support the amendment.
Now we turn our attention to the Senate, where Senator Patty Murray will be offering an amendment to strike the Craig rider (See MPC's web page for today's NYT advertisement on the Craig rider), and the Clinton administration, who must be reminded that the Craig rider is bad law: bad for the environment and bad for the taxpayer.
Thanks again for everyone's hard work!
Passed by 273 to 151 vote.
